What's the difference between the bulb bases?

There are a wide variety of types of bulb mounts, the most common of which is the Edison screw mount, which can be found on most incandescent bulbs as well as on halogen, compact fluorescent, HID, and now widely available LED lights.

When choosing a lamp, you may also see a lot of bases starting with E, such as E26/E12/E39/E17 LED bulb and so on. In fact, they all come from Edison screw bases. The letter E stands for Edison, and the number behind is used to indicate the diameter, in millimeters (mm).
